Chiropractic Strokes – The Signs and Symptoms

Many Americans go to chiropractors for neck or back adjustments and nothing bad happens.

But occasionally something goes terribly wrong — and chiropractic patients come away with strokes, brain or spinal damage, permanent disability or even death.

In fact, recent research published by the National Institutes of Health found that 31 percent of patients who suffered artery damage from a chiropractic neck manipulation either died shortly thereafter or were left permanently disabled.

That’s where The Abelson Law Firm, comes in.

Our Washington DC chiropractic malpractice attorneys are currently investigating cases of vascular arterial dissection and strokes caused by chiropractic neck manipulation. If you or a loved one has suffered such an injury, you are entitled to a free and confidential legal evaluation. The Abelson Law Firm, has offices in Washington DC and Maryland, but accepts chiropractic injury cases from all over the country.

When a chiropractor manipulates a patient’s neck, the manipulation may cause the vertebral or carotid artery to dissect. These vital arteries carry blood to the brain. If the artery is torn, or dissected, it may form a thrombus and cut off the flow of blood to the brain. This is known as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA).

Signs and Symptoms of Chiropractic Stroke

There have been more than 500 reported cases of chiropractic patients suffering a stroke following a cervical spine manipulation. Some of these victims died. Others were left with paralysis, brain damage and crippling injuries.

When a chiropractor manipulates a patient’s back or neck, particularly if it involves forceful rotation of the head to one side, the manipulation can stretch one of the arteries that follow the spine and carry blood to the brain. If the artery is torn, or dissected, it can cut off the flow of blood to the brain. This can cause a stroke, also known as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Other strokes result from a burst blood vessel or bleeding in the brain.

More than 700,000 people suffer strokes each year, according to the National Stroke Foundation. Survivors are often left with lifelong disabilities, including partial paralysis and a need for costly rehabilitation and personal nursing care.

Strokes are the third-leading cause of death in the United States, claiming 160,000 lives each year.

Patients might not notice any warning signs right after leaving the chiropractor’s office. It can take days or weeks for an arterial injury to produce recognizable symptoms of a stroke.

Following are early signals of danger:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, including the face
  • Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden trouble seeing with one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble with walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination
  • Loss or impairment of speech and motor coordination
  • Weakness or paralysis in the limbs or on one side of the body
  • Problems with thoughts, memory and emotions
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

Medical Research Links Chiropractic Manipulation to Strokes

A study in Britain found that an alarmingly high number of chiropractic patients suffered neurological complications within 24 hours of a cervical spine manipulation. Even more disturbing was the fact that most chiropractic mishaps go unreported.

In 2011, researchers at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix studied 13 patients who experienced head and neck pain after a chiropractic visit, typically hours or days after having their necks adjusted. In every one of the 13 cases, doctors found damage to arteries located close to the upper vertebrae that supply the brain with blood and oxygen.

Three had permanent neurological deficits as a result of the damage. One died of a massive stroke.

The American Heart Association estimates that strokes cost the country up to $53.9 billion each year in health care services, medications and lost productivity.

A qualified chiropractic stroke injury lawyer can help alleviate this staggering expense for chiropractic stroke victims and their families. A chiropractic injury lawsuit can seek compensation for:

  • Physical and occupational therapy to regain lost abilities such as speaking, walking, bathing and feeding oneself
  • Psychiatric care to deal with emotional pain and frustration due to diminished physical ability
  • Pain and suffering
  • Doctor and hospital bills
  • Prescription drug costs
  • Lost income
  • Disability.
